Will your themes work with my WordPress.com blog?

Unfortunately, the themes here are not compatible with WordPress.COM sites. To use our themes, you will need to have your own web host, with FTP access and a fresh install of WordPress.

Note: There is a lite version of AutoFocus available at wordpress.com but its features are very limited compared with the version offered here. In the future we’d like to collaborate with the team at WordPress to bring our themes into the premium themes marketplace on WordPress.COM. We’ll blog about it once we’re close to pulling it off.

How do I install a theme?

All of our themes are delivered as a zip file when it’s downloaded from our site.

This zip file can usually be uploaded directly to your WordPress site using the instructions in our themes’ documentation.

The one exception is when you download your files with the Safari web browser, which automatically unzips files into a folder and then deletes the original zip file.

There are a few possible workarounds for this:

Log into your account with a different browser, and re-download the zip file. Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer will all work properly.
Recover the zip file from the garbage. Usually Safari discards the original zip into the trash and it is easy to drag the file back to your desktop.
Zip the folder back up using any standard compression application.
Use FTP to transfer the unzipped folder to your website rather than using the built-in WordPress uploader.

How do I update my theme?

Automatic updates will be available soon but for now this has to be done via FTP. To upgrade, you simply need to replace the old theme folder on your server with the updated version via FTP. Here’s some instruction for that.

Download the free FTP app FileZilla for (PC & Mac), install and launch it.
To configure FileZilla to connect to your website please select FILE > SITE MANAGER.
A SITE MANAGER window will show up. Click on NEW SITE and enter your Site Name for the new connection.
Now you need to fill in your FTP account credentials. Please enter your Host name ( ftp address), Server Type ( FTP), User Name and Password which are all available from your webhost.
Then, click on Connect and if you entered the information correctly, it will connect to your server and display the files and folders available on the server.
Typically, if your web host uses a cPanel server, your main root directory is called /public_html/. The WordPress directory you need is the /wp-content/themes/ directory.
Before doing anything further, back up your current theme by copying it from the /themes/ directory to your computer and then change the folder name to include the date. (ie: /autofocus/ would become /autofocus-2-10-2013/). Keep this version of the theme on file just in case you need to rollback.
Next, download the updated version of the theme and extract it to your computer. Upload the resulting folder to your /themes/ directory replacing the older theme folder with the new one.
And you’re done! (In some case you may need to re-save your Theme Options after this step)

I updated/installed my theme and my site went blank!

If you site goes blank after installing or updating your theme, it most likely means that your theme did not upload completely.

To correct this, you first need to restore access to the WordPress backend and re-install your theme. To do this you have to access you site via FTP. Here’s some instruction.

Download the free FTP app FileZilla for (PC & Mac), install and launch it.

The WordPress directory you need is the /wp-content/themes/ directory.
Find the your active theme folder and remove it from your server (You may want to keep a backup of it just in case). This will restore access to the WordPress back-end.
Once you are back in the of WordPress admin area install your theme as you would normally using the INSTALL THEME tab located at APPEARANCE > THEMES .

How do I troubleshoot my plugins?

Sometimes when installing a new theme, a plugin conflict. This is usually caused by an outdated or plugin loading scripts that create for the new theme.

To find out which plugin is causing the issue:

Login to the WordPress admin area and go to PLUGINS
Deactivate ALL plugins
Now visit the front-end of your site and see if the problem is still there
If the problem disappears, than it means you may have an outdated or conflicting plugin
To figure out which plugin isn’t playing nice, re-activate each plugin 1-by-1 while also re-visiting the front of the site until you see the problem comes back
Once you see the problem return, you’ll know that the last plugin you activated has some conflicting script
From there, you can either contact the plugin author, or replace the plugin with something comparable that is also compatible
